A Simple Start (or Getting Started) for Teaching with Film
A) Introduce the Topic(s) – When you are using a film as a tool to discuss a specific topic, social issue or event, set the stage. Share background information that will enhance the viewing experience. Remind students to keep an open-mind when viewing the film.
B) Honor Experiences and Feelings – Remind students/viewers that all experiences and feelings must be respected and honored, those of other viewers and those presented in the film. Verify ahead of time that the film and viewing space are accessible for all participants.
C) Ask Open-Ended Questions – Select/create questions that encourage connection to the film and its characters and that cultivate deep engagement with the film’s topic(s).
