About
Mission
Journeys in Film is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status dedicated to advancing global education. Our mission centers on the use of film to educate and promote a richer understanding of and appreciation for the diverse and complex world in which we live. Our resources focus on mitigating existing attitudes of cultural bias and racism, cultivating human empathy and compassion, developing a deeper knowledge of global issues and current challenges, and encouraging civic engagement to create a community of globally competent citizens.
Our resources use the audio-visual storytelling of films as a tool for engaging and inspiring others to want to learn more about our world. Compelling, age-appropriate films combined with comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum guides support various learning styles, promote literacy, and foster deep learning around core academic objectives in key subject areas, such as Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts, Media Literacy, etc. While the central focus of Journeys in Film is on K-12 education, particularly middle and high school grade levels, we also strive to extend our materials into other educational settings, including libraries, community groups, corporate learning environments, homeschooling spaces, museums, and beyond.
Vision
We envision a world where today’s youth become compassionate leaders, driving societal progress through kindness, understanding, and scientific innovation. Our vision is to cultivate globally aware, media-literate citizens who are prepared to tackle the world’s greatest challenges and most pressing issues.
Through engaging, film-based curricula and resources that foster empathy and cross-cultural connections, we aim to equip students to thrive in a diverse world. We inspire educators, parents, and communities to spark curiosity and creativity, preparing young minds to make meaningful contributions to a brighter, more connected future.
Values
We support individuals committed to education, empathy, and understanding. This includes individuals working in traditional classroom settings, unconventional learning spaces, filmmaking and the creative arts, or any other learning environment or community.
We understand the power of learning and how storytelling can contribute to a deeper understanding of key subjects, concepts, events, and life experiences.
We believe media literacy, critical thinking, and an understanding of the media creation process and its role in our lives are essential.
We prioritize connections and interconnectedness and seek to connect directly with the key communities and individuals that we serve and to build connections and understanding across cultures.
We recognize the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in the workplace, in learning communities, and with the educational resources we create.
We value compassion and empathy and imagination and curiosity in all workplaces and learning communities and view each of these as critical tools in education that can assist with efforts to counter racism, gender inequity, hate speech, xenophobia, etc.
